Friday Favorites from Broma Bakery, The Sweet and Simple Kitchen, Pretty Pink Tulips, and More

Scrabble Tiles,Vintage plaid blanket,  Similar Blanket Here

Happy Fall! And of course a happy Friday to you. Does it feel like Fall to you? In my area it is still in the 80's so its doesn't feel much like Fall but thats ok I am still celebrating its arrival.

Image from Broma Bakery

Fall is all about apples, pears, pumpkins and butternut squash. This Butternut Squash Mac & Cheese from Broma Bakery looks like the perfect dish to celebrate the coming of Fall.

Chicken Pumpkin Quinoa Soup from Whole Fully

If you are looking for a healthy soup this Chicken Pumpkin Quinoa Soup from Whole Fully looks delicious.

If you need a little chocolate fix this weekend you could make a batch of these Triple Chocolate Fudge Browneis.

Image from the Sweet and Simple Kitchen

Of all of the sweet treats to eat my absolute favorite isn't cookies, cake, brownies or candy, it is yeast doughnuts with frosting and no sprinkles. I search out the best doughnuts in every place that I travel and I have been known to eat a doughnut for breakfast and dinner too. Oddly, I have never made yeast doughnuts, but that is about to change because I will be making these Perfect Yeast Doughnuts from the Sweet and Simple Kitchen

Recycled Glass Pumpkins

Typically I decorate with pumpkins, gourds, pine cones and other natural items but I think I may have to get these recycled glass pumpkins from Pottery Barn.

Branching Out with New Things From West Elm

Good morning! I don't know about you but I am so happy tomorrow is Friday. It has been a long week and frankly I need a rest. I want to be a slug and just do nothing. OK, let me rephrase that, I don;t want to be on a schedule and I do not want to work and I just want to relax, putter around and do what I want, like bake and eat.

Image West Elm

I had a conversation a few months ago with an interior designer and she mentioned that she was thinking of giving up her profession because everyone seemed to want the same thing, "the perfect white/grey house" that they see on Pinterest and Instagram. Really? What happened to originality, and making your house your castle? Why would you want your house to look like everyone else?

Image Pinterest

I do not have a white or grey house and shockingly there are no slip-covers. I have a traditional house with a collected interior. My husband and I have been traveling the world since we were teens and our house reflects that.

Image Stone Gable via Pinterest

We have very eclectic taste, I love traditional Ralph Lauren plaids, and paisleys in dark blues and browns but then I love modern art in bright fuchsia, green and cobalt blue. I think the family crystal looks beautiful with hand-made pottery plates and twig flatware.

I typically shop vintage, antiques and more traditional looking shops, and I love one of a kind things. But I also shop at Williams Sonoma and Pottery barn for seasonal items and occasionally West Elm when I receive their new catalog.

Image West Elm

As I paged through the latest offerings online I found several items I liked. I really want this bright rug although I have no where to go with it. I love these mixing bowls and can always use a few more.  We buy these Rewind candles all the time and I am pondering these lamb mugs for my niece and nephew.

What in your decorating style? Modern, eclectic, traditional? What is your favorite place for accessories? Do you shop at West Elm? What if your favorite but there?

Have a great day!

Just Curious...What is going on in Your World?

Good morning! I hope all is well with you. In the news there is another storm, another earthquake, another missile test and a half a million people have cholera in Yemen. Some days I do not like to face the harsh world around me. What about you?

I recently read this post on Jen's blog Peanut Butter Runner and I sat down to write the answers of my own life in this survey-style questionnaire.

What are you...

Making : Anything with pumpkin, to included pumpkin bread, pumpkin pancakes, pumpkin pasta and a few other recipes I will share later.

Cooking : Meatballs and homemade sauce and chili this weekend.

Drinking : Water and Trying to cut out my 1 mini Coke Zero every other day because I have read terrible things about artificial sweeteners.

Reading: The Chilbury Ladies' Choir by Jennifer Ryan

Wanting: Cooler weather, no humidity.

Looking: At a huge pile of books and magazines that I have stored like a squirrel to read in the next few weeks.

Playing: Classical music while I type this post.

Wasting: Time. I am a worrier and I waste too much time thinking and worrying about things I have no control over.

Sewing: I can sew by hand but I cannot sew on my sewing machine, the thread always gets bunched up.

Wishing: For peace and calm in the world. Sorry if this seems like a "Miss America" answer but I am sometimes overwhelmed by all of the sadness in the world and wonder if God is trying to send us a message.

Enjoying: Pumpkins. I love them, orange, white, grey, pink, whatever the color, size or shape I want to bring them all home with me.

Waiting: To have my first piece of pumpkin pie!

Liking: Plaid, Fall colors and warm cozy clothes.

Wondering: If I have what it takes to complete the 200 hour teacher training classes for yoga. I am actually a shy, introvert and the thought of teaching a class scares the heck out of me and takes me so far out of my comfort zone I can't tell you.

Loving: My new haircut and "winter color", basically the same as before but no highlights.

Hoping: To be with my family for the holidays. And to take a few photography lessons this winter.

Marvelling: That I survived my August challenge. I attend hot Vinyasa yoga 5 days a week, an hour a day. I challenged myself for the month of August to attend 2 classes a day either back to back or one in the am, once in the pm. It was the most physically and mentally challenging thing I have done to date and I am proud that I was able to do it.

Needing: Nothing.

Smelling: Williams Sonoma Pumpkin Spice Candle and Spiced Chestnut two of my favorite Fall and holiday scents.

Wearing: My Fall/Winter wardrobe, Minnetonka slippers, a comfy sweatshirt and flannel pj's.

Following: The weather forecast.

Noticing: All of the suffering in the world these last few weeks with the hurricanes.

Knowing: Life is short. My sister lost her fiancee 13 years ago and last night his son passed away. Hug the ones your love and ALWAYS tell them you love them.

Thinking: Lately, I have been thinking that I need to live more "in the moment." My mind runs off worrying about stupid stuff and I am missing out on the present.

Feeling: Happy that Fall is on the way. I am looking forward to lazy weekends, wrapping gifts, making cookies and getting ready for the upcoming holidays.

Bookmarking: Many recipes on Pinterest for comfort food, Mexican recipes, desserts/cookies of the holidays.

Opening: My mind to the possibilities of new adventures and activities this year.

Giggling: At the antics of my pups Pisa and Paris.

That is what is going on in my world, what about you? What are you, liking, making, feeling?

If you would like to answer your own set of questions here they are. If you post them on your blog let me know I would love to read what is going on in your world.

Let the Cat Out of the Bag...Leopard for Fall

Good morning! Has your week started out as your wanted? If not there is still time to get it on track after all it is only Tuesday.

Image Here via Pinterest

Leopard is everywhere this Fall, bags, booties, hats, coats and more. Leopard could be considered a neutral or it could be a statement, I guess it all depends on how you wear it. If you were walking the street in head to toe leopard pattern than you would definitely be a statement. I personally like to wear either a leopard belt or boots or a bag (not alltogether) but with a crisp shirt, black pants or jeans and that's it. I like the leopard print to be the accent and the focus at the same time.

Image HERE via Pinterest

I rounded up a few of my favorite leopard bags, just in case you want to add one to your collection! If money were no object I would add the Gucci bag to my Fall wardrobe. Instead I am thinking of this clutch or this handbag. I will let you know which I choose.

Are you a leopard fan? Do you wear it frequently? Do you like to be a statement or a "neutral"? Speaking of bags,  do you prefer a clutch? Tote? Or handbag?

Have a wonderful day! Be safe in the storm(I feel like this is starting to be an everyday thing), I believe there are now 3 storms churning.

One Bowl Mixed Berry Crumb Cake

Good morning! A very happy Monday to you. In just 5 days it is officially spring. If you blink it will soon be Christmas 97 days to be exact. If you would like to keep track for yourself,  click here for the countdown clock.

My weekend was nice, quiet and leisurely. In the summer when the weather is hot and sunny I feel like I need to get out, go to the beach, sit in the sun, enjoy the heat and warm weather. In the Fall and Winter I am a nester and I am a little slug. I like to stay home, read books and magazines, bake, relax and fluff up my house.

I made this cake for breakfast and it quick, and it is delicious. I think it is a great way to enjoy the last few days of summer.

Mixed Berry Crumb Cake

4 ounces very soft butter
3/4 cup sugar
1 large egg
1/2 cup buttermilk
2 cups all purpose flour
2 teaspoons baking powder
3/4 teaspoon salt
11/2 cups of mixed berries, blueberries and raspberries

Topping
3/4 cup sugar
 1 cup all purpose flour
4 ounces melted butter
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

Preheat oven to 375. Spray a 10 inch tart pan with removable bottom. Coat the pan with baking spray. You can also use a 9" round cake  pan. Make sure to spray with cooking spray and then line with parchment paper.
With a whisk or a wooden spoon mix the butter and sugar in a large bowl until the mixture is light and fluffy. Then add the egg and mix well. Add the buttermilk, mix well. Add one cup of flour and sprinkle the baking soda and salt evenly over the flour. Mix until all of the flour is incorporated. Add the second cup of flour and mix just until the flour is incorporated.
Gently fold int he berries.

For the topping
Combine all of the ingredients for the topping in a bowl and mix with a fork until you have large clumps. Sprinkle the topping evenly over the cake. Bake in the oven for 20 minutes, then cover with foil and return to the oven. Bake for another 15-20 minutes until a toothpick comes out clean. Remove from oven, cool. Sprinkle with powdered sugar and enjoy.

Have a great week

NOTES: I used a square tart pan for this recipe.

Fall Capes, Ponchos and Scarves

Good morning! It is hot and humid here today I think its going to be 85. We will be walking at the beach and having a BBQ but that has not stopped me from dreaming of the cool, crisp air that is to come.

Image Vogue via Pinterest

I am not sure about the weather where you live but we don't dig out our winter coats very often unless we are going to ski or we have our twice a year snow fall. So for the most part something light is perfect. I personally love the look of a capelarge scarf or poncho.

Here are a few of my favorites and most are plaid which is my other favorites.

What do you wear in the Fall? Is this a look that works for you? Do you prefer the blanket scarf? Poncho? Or a cape?

Have a great Saturday!

I know that for many the temps are already falling and the mornings are crisp. My mom said that it already seems like Fall in the Mid-west. Here it is still hot but that does not mean that my thoughts are not on the important parts of fall. Comfort food! This Slow Cooker Beef Stroganoff from Sugar Salt Magic looks like the perfect meal to come home to on a cold day.

Slow Cooker Chicken Chili from the Chunky Chef

On a cold day I love carbs, especially bread. I could make a meal out of a hot loaf of bread straight from the oven slathered in butter. Sometimes though I do not have much luck with yeast bread. I am hoping that this delicious Fresh Herb Bread from The Pastry Affair turns out well because it everything that I like, crusty, soft and herby.

Louise Wilkinson Timeless Design

Good morning! I love blue and white dishes, bedding, clothes and home decor and more.  I think it is a classic don't you?

Recently I discovered a Louise Wulkinson, an English illustrator that creates beautiful, timeless pieces for your home. Most if not all are made and decorated in the UK to maintain her exacting standards.

Don't you love the classic, old-world patterns with a new modern look. They remind me of my favorite transfer ware patterns with a splash of color and new design that can stand the test of time. My favorites pieces are the pitcher which I think would be lovely filled with flowers or used as a serving piece. And the rabbit side place which will go perfectly with my other white dishes.

I think these pieces are so beautiful and timeless that they could be passed from one generation to the next.

Are you familiar with her work? Do you know any other classic English designers? If so please share because I am always interested in new wares.

Have a great day!

Note: This is not a sponsored post, I just like Louise's work. Although there are affiliate links included in the post.

Just Curious...Are You a Pumpkin Spice Fan?

Good morning! I hope that today is a better day for many and that they are able to return to their homes and assess the damage and to make a plan to move forward. In the last few days I have hears so many stories and I cannot get them out of my mind. I am praying and hoping for the best.

Pumpkin Soup with Chorizo

It''s September and the blogs and Pinterest have been featuring Fall decor, recipes and more for a few weeks. Don't get me wrong, I love Fall but as I have said I am trying to "live in the moment" or season as the case may be so I am easing my way into the season.

Pumpkin Bread

I have been a chocolate lover my entire life and in fact have another blog called Once Upon a Chocolate Life but to be honest pumpkin spice is my favorite flavor ever. I could eat pumpkin pie, pumpkin bread, pumkin mac and cheese, pumpkin soup and everything and anything containing pumpkin spice all year long I love it that much. Although, I do not like pumpkin spiced latte, or #PSL  as the millennials' refer to it but that is only because I do not like or drink coffee.

Pumpkin Patch Cupcakes

With that my question to you is,  are you a pumping spice lover? Pumpkin itself is a neutral flavor that is why they add it to so many things, but pumpkin spice is a mixture of cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, cloves, allspice and mace. That heady and fragrant combination adds so much flavor to pies, breads, cakes, and even savory dishes.

Pumpkin Bread Pudding

If you would like to make your own pumpkin spice and you should because it is easy and tastes so much better than the pre-mixed version,  here is the recipe I use.

Ingredients:
1/3 cup ground cinnamon
1 tablespoon ground ginger
1 tablespon freshly ground nutmeg or mace
11/2 teaspoon ground cloves
11/2 teaspoon ground allspice

Mix together and store in a jar.

Pumpkin Pancakes

What is your favorite pumpkin spice dessert?  Pie, cookies, brownies, cheesecake? And what about a savory dish, soup, pasta, roasted pumpkin, salads or something entirely different?

I would also like to welcome you to share a recipe or two, perhaps your family has passed along a recipe that you cherish?

If you would like to know a little about the history of Pumpkin Spice this is a great article.

Have a great day!

The Harvest Table by Williams Sonoma

Good morning! I hope that you are having a good week. I am a little tired and it's only Tuesday. I think it's because I spent so much time watching the hurricane news the last two days. The amount of destruction is unbelievable. I feel so badly for all of these people. I have them in my prayers.

Image Williams Sonoma via Pinterest

The weather has been unseasonably cool here and my mind has been on Fall. I haven't baked anything yet but I have a list of pumpkin recipes a mile long. I have also been to Williams Sonoma  one of my favorite places to shop for the holidays. I love everything they have for this season especially the botanical pumpkin salad plates, and platter. Typically what I do is buy the salad plates of whatever collection that I like and I combine them with my everyday white plates or my brown transfer ware and the rest of my entertaining pieces. That way I can use the pieces  I already have and really like.

I love pumpkins, I like to eat them, decorate with them and purchase a plethora of them to decorate the house with during the cool Fall months, especially the baby boo white ones and the pale green and pink Cinderella pumpkins. I am contemplating the Staub pumpkin, the botanical apron and the embroidered tea towel. I already have the pumpkin spice candle, and lotion and it smells just like Fall.

Are you a fan of Williams Sonoma? Have you been in the store to see the new harvest collection or have you admired it in the catalog? Or do you have another favorite place to shop for holiday decor?

The Botanical Pumpkin line is on sale for 20% off!

I hope that you have a great day.

To those of you in Florida, Alabama, Georgia, and the Carolinas, be safe while cleaning up after the storm. Thinking of you and praying that your job ahead is not so bad.

Bacon, Brie and Avocado Sandwich

Good morning! How was your weekend? I hate to say that mine was great when so many were suffering. It seems as if the last month there has been nothing but hurricanes, fires and earthquakes.  As I write this is it too soon to know the extent of the damage but I am praying that it is not bad.

When times are crazy I bake and eat comfort food. In addition to pizza and pasta one of my favorite comfort foods is sandwiches. This bacon, brie and avocado on cranberry walnut bread is my new favorite Fall sandwich.  The sandwich is sweet, smokey, savory, crunchy, gooey and delicious.  I love the fact that it is so easy and so good. You can change the bread to whatever you like and I like it just as much with camembert or cambozola cheese too.

Bacon Brie Avocado Sandwich
Recipe Adapted from Quinn Cooper Style

Ingredients

1/2 pound of bacon
3 tablespoons of brown sugar
Fresh ground pepper/salt
1 wedge of Brie cheese
1 avocado
Cranberry Walnut Bread or Multi-grain Crusty Bread
Directions

Preheat oven to 400F. Place tin foil on a baking sheet then add a baking rack. Place bacon on the rack and sprinkle with brown sugar, bake the bacon until crisp and glazed about 15-18 minutes. Cut the avocado in half, remove the pit. Slice each half of avocado into slices of the thickness that you like. Take two slices of bread for your sandwich and place a couple of slices of brie on the bottom, add several pieces of bacon and finally add as the avocado. Sprinkle with salt and pepper and enjoy. You can toast your bread of you like or you can leave it fresh.

What do you think? Is this a sandwich that you would try? Do you have a favorite comfort
food sandwich?

Have a great day! Be safe if you are still in the path of Irma.
