Busy Bee or Queen Bee

Bee Art

Good morning! I am fascinated by bee's, especially as the last few years they have been in the news a lot because of their declining numbers. In my area there has been a big push to educate people about bees and my local garden center has even been having bee talks to educate people on raising their own bees, and creating a bee friendly yard.

Image the Salish Sea Cottage

This summer I have been following Pamela of Salish Sea Cottage on Instagram and the ups and downs of her bee keeping adventure. I am fascinated by her progress as I had heard about the same bee house that she has and thought of getting one myself. Thankfully I have seen first hand what goes into raising bees and have now decided to leave it up to someone that has more knowledge than I do. I think I will just stick to the bee plantings in my yard and the items in my house.

Gold Bee

Wether you are a "busy bee" or a "Queen bee" here are some fun finds I discovered this week, including  accessoriesbath items, perfume and more.

Friday Favorites from Closet Cooking, Joy the Baker, Nest by Tamara, Happy Nom Nom and More

Good morning. Another day another attack. It is so very sad that this is the new reality of the world. Growing up I remember hearing about these attacks in the Middle East(on one of 3 news stations) and being so afraid for the people who lived there. Nowadays, it seems as if there is something going on all of the time. If

Just Curious...How Do You Deal with Stress?

Good morning! I hope that you are having a good week. Thank goodness tomorrow is Friday. Between the crazy, non-stop bad news all over the world and things going on at home I am feeling a little, no make that a lot stressed this week. So I am curious, how do you deal with stress? Perhaps you have a few tips that I do not use that you would like to share?

I am not sure about you but when I am stressed I can usually find things during the day to occupy my time and distract me, but once the lights are out and I am left along with my thoughts my mind is like a whirly gig and I cannot turn it off. I will lay there for hours mulling over scenarios and solutions until I am so exhausted I finally fall asleep. Are you the same or does sleep off you solace from the stress?

Here are a 10 things that I try to do to cope with stress:

1. Take long walks
2. Take soothing baths
3. Call and talk to a friend
4. Go to the library or the bookstore and relax
5. Go to yoga class
6. Bake
7.Write in my journal
8. Go to church
9. Pray
10. TRY to accept what I cannot change. This is the hardest for me.

To be perfectly honest, sometimes these things work and sometimes they don't. Sometimes they work to help settle my mind for a little while and then sometimes not.

I have been a worrier and a fixer my whole life and as I age I have been trying to let things go and realize that not everything is mine to fix or to solve.  Easier said than done but I am making progress.

What about you? Are you a worrier? Do you have coping mechanisms for stress that work for you?

Thanks for sharing your thoughts. Have a great day.

Flamingo Finds for a Pop of Color and a Touch of Whimsy

Flamingos are everywhere this summer, in yard, in your house, on the walls. As I am making a point to focus on the remaining days of summer and not jump into Fall I thought it would be fun to look at how you can add a pop of color to your house this year or next year with these fun flamingo finds.

Image Pinterest via Etsy Shop mrsmcveyvintage

There are pillows for indoors or out, swizzle sticks for your next fruity drink, wash cloths for the bath or perhaps a mug for your morning coffee?

What do you think of the flamingo fad? Are you a fan? Have you decorated with a few of these bright pink birds this year. I have to admit that I do not have any flamingos in my decor but I love the flamingo pink dinnerware and could see myself using it along with my white dishes and serving pieces to add a pop of color to my next party.

If you would like to add a little free Flamingo Art to your home check out this great tutorial from The Painted Hive.

Have happy, hopefully sunny, summer day!

Summer Peach Salad

Good Monday morning to you. Did you have a nice weekend? Mine was relaxing. The weather was so strange, I woke up Saturday and it was so dark and black outside the street lights were on. It was like that most of the day with heavy rain and high winds. Around 2:00 the sun poked its head out and then it rained again, then the sun came out and then it rained, again. Finally, it stopped raining and was hot and steamy. Sunday, more of the same. Needless to say I was able to do lots of laundry, cleaning and reading.

I did make this scrumptious salad filled with some of my favorite summer flavors,  juicy peaches, crisp greens and tangy blue cheese and sweet honey. Add a little vinaigrette and you have a perfect salad. If you would like you can add a little chicken for protein.

Summer Peach Salad
Serves 4

8-10 cups spring mix salad or arugula
2 peaches sliced
1/4 cup red onion thinly sliced
2 ounces blue cheese crumbled
1/3 cup toasted pecans roughly chopped

Place salad mix onto plate or into a salad bowl, the add the peach slices, onions, pecans and the blue cheese crumbles. Add vinaigrette and enjoy!

Basic Vinaigrette.
3/4 to 1 cup olive oil, extra-virgin olive oil, or any good-tasting oil
1/4 cup good-tasting vinegar or lemon juice

1/2 teaspoon mustard
1/2 teaspoon honey
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/8 to 1/4 teaspoon black pepper

Place all ingredients into a jar or a small bowl. If using a jar, simply shake the ingredients until combined. If using a whisk, simply whisk rapidly until mixture comes together.

Have a fabulous day!

Seaside Finds for Your Home

Good morning! I don't know about your area but the kids are already heading back to school here.  That always signals the end of summer to me even though we have a couple more weeks before Fall officially starts. And a week ago my grocery store had pumpkins and Halloween candy! In August...doesn't that seem a little early?

Image Harpers Bazaar via Pinterest

I am not ready to let go of summer yet are you? I still want to enjoy my days walking on the beach, with the waves lapping at my feet, looking for shells.

I found some beautiful pillows yesterday that you can use indoors or outdoors. So if your house is not a beach house or your decor is not "beach house chic" you could use them on your deck or porch instead. I personally love the lobster pillow and the sand dollar pillows. The sand dollar pillows remind me of family vacations in Marco Island shelling and looking for sand dollars.

Image Harpers Bazaar via Pinterest

I love the smell of the salt air, the bright blue of the ocean, and the colorful sea glass that you can find if you look carefully. Doesn't this bright beautiful bowl remind of your sea glass?

I am curious as to what a sea salt candle smells like and white sandy beaches soap as well.

Image Harpers Bazaar via Pinterest

I personally would love to add any of the above paintings by Steve Gianetti to my own collection of water/wave paintings.

Do you love the seaside as much as I do? Do you like to spend hours walking the shoreline listening to the waves or are you the one first in the water swimming and jumping in the waves? Perhaps sitting in the sand with a good book is more your style?

Whatever the case I hope that you enjoy your weekend whether you are at the waters edge or not.

Be safe and have a great one.

Friday Favorites from My Domaine, Blissful Basil, An Italian in My Kitchen Habitually Chic and More

Good morning to you. I am so happy it is Friday. I mentioned before that I do hot Vinyasa yoga 5 days a week for an hour a session. This month I have challenged myself to take 2, 1 hour classes a day, 5 days a week. Several days I have taken back to back classes and other days I take one class in the morning one at night. Needless to say, I am a wee bit tired and ready for a rest.

Image My Domaine

Are you a documentary fan, if so My Domaine has compiled a list of "the Best Documentaries of All-Time. Take a look and see how their list compares with yours.

I discovered two great new blogs this week:

Image An Italian in MY Kitchen

The first, An Italian in My Kitchen written by Rosemary who moved to Italy for love over 20 years ago and shares not only her favorite dishes from her homeland but also AUTHENTIC Italian dishes they way that real Italians make them,

Image Blissful Basil

The second, Blissful Basil written by Ashley, a beautiful plant based, vegan blog filled with interesting recipes but also health lifestyle tips as well.

Image A Beautiful Mess

I found a great craft that you can make on your own or with your kids, nieces, nephews or grandkids. Make your own Bath Bombs from A Beautiful Mess. These would be great to pop into the tub on those cold winter nights.

Image Elizabeth's Kitchen Diary

Summer is slipping away and I am doing everything I can do to preserve it, including making quintessential summer treats. On my list for the weekend are these scrumptious looking Strawberry Shortcakes from Elizabeth's Kitchen Diary.

Image Once Upon A Chocolate

If you need a chocolate fix than you must make this Chocolate Truffle Cheesecake, I made it this week and it is rich, creamy and over the top fabulous.

Interesting post 12 Things Happy People Do Differently from Heather at Habitually Chic.

Here are two things you may or may not know about me, 1). I like things( cups, bowls, shirts, etc) with interesting fonts on them. 2). I typically Christmas shop all year and am finished and have some gifts wrapped by September.

Berry Bowl

These items I found are right up my alley, they have writing on them and are also the perfect gifts for Christmas. These  berry bowls are cute and the good new is that they are on sale. I did get a set for me and a set for a friend for Christmas.

Sentiment Glasses

and I am contemplating these Sentiment Glasses as a gift as well.

Did you discover anything interesting this week, a good book, a movie, a recipe or something else to share? If so please tell us about it.

Have a wonderful and safe weekend!

Discover Doris & Co. UK

A good Thursday morning to you! I discovered a great company this week called Doris & Co Of Motto and Memento.  It is a cool British company that makes English creamware pottery and home items using old fashioned methods in the Georgian and Early industrial tradition.

I love the teapots, illustrated  greeting cards and totes.

Enough is Good Enough Jug

From Small Acorns Mug

But my favorite pieces are the mugs, and the jugs.  Especially this "from small acorns" mug, which I ordered for myself.  Remember, "from small acorns come mighty oaks." I love the old fashioned illustrations and quality of the pieces.

Each piece reminds me of something I might discover in at the Portobello Antiques Market in London. I hope you enjoyed Doris & Co.

Have a great day!

Just Curious...Have You Noticed Some Pinterest Changes?

Good morning! I have been a fan of Pinterest for a long time. I think it is a great way to organize ideas and "tear sheets", to make plans for projects or even recipes to try. I used to think it was a great way to organize my own blogs, Pine Cones and Acorns,  Between Sisters Between Friends, and Once Upon a Chocolate Life so that followers of those blogs could just pop to the top of the page and find all of the pins they were looking for in one place.

Lately though I am not too sure that I even like Pinterest anymore. I cannot figure out what is going on with them. In the past I had my three blogs, Pine Cones and Acorns,  Between Sisters Between Friends, and Once Upon a Chocolate Life as the first three boards followed by whatever season we were in.

That way people that were looking for pins from those blogs or from me on "Summer Food" or  "Fall Baking" could see all of my favorite pins without having to scroll thru over 190 boards. Which I might add I painstakingly put in alphabetical order.

Now a days each and every time I go to my boards they are in some random order, even if I spend time organizing them. I cannot even get them to stay in alphabetical order for one day!

In addition, in the past I was able to see pins from many of the people that I followed, now the selection of pins is narrowed significantly and almost not worth looking at. In the past one could also scroll through pages and pages of "food" pins but that is carefully curated as well.

Is it just me or are you having issues with Pinterest as well? Have you noticed the changes? Are they new or have they been around for awhile and I did not notice them? Can someone with more knowledge than I explain to me the easiest way possible to put one's boards bake in alphabetical order? Or tell me if I would be wasting my time doing it?

Thank you in advance for any and all advice, I appreciate it.

Have a great day!

Cobalt Blue for Any Season

Good morning! How is your week starting? I read this morning that 2/3rd's of the country will be having a below average August in terms of weather and that you will be experiencing some Fall like weather.

Stone Gable Fall Image Yvonne Glasses

That has me a little "blue" and has me pondering Fall decorating as well. I personally LOVE cobalt blue and I think you can use it as an accent at most any season. One of my favorite bloggers, Yvonne from Stone Gable uses it in the Spring and Fall and pairs it with transferwarepumpkins, , glasses and more.

What do you think? Are you a fan of cobalt blue? Can you see yourself veering off from the traditional colors of the seasons and adding a little cobalt blue to your tables?

Cinnamon Walnut Coffeecake

Good morning! How was your weekend? It certainly looked like a wild one weather wise, hopefully you were not affected by it. We had beautiful, sunny weather but I can already feel a little of Fall in the air. Or maybe that it just my imagination as Fall is 40 plus days away.

I made an easy and delicious Cinnamon Walnut coffeecake this weekend that would be perfect to eat now and to keep in your file for the upcoming holidays. I also think it would be a great cake to make and give as gifts.

Cinnamon Walnut Coffeecake

Topping

3/4 cup granulated sugar
1 Tablespoon ground cinnamon
3/4 cup chopped walnuts

Batter

3 cups of flour
11/2 teaspoons baking powder
11/2 teaspoons baking soda
1 teaspoon salt
3/4 cup softened butter
11/4 cup of sugar
3 eggs
11/2 cups Greek yogurt
11/2 teaspoon vanilla extract

Preheat oven to 350. Prepare a 10" tube pan with cooking spray. In a small bowl combine the topping ingredients and set aside.

In a small bowl whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda and salt, set aside. In the bowl of a stand mixer cream together the butter and sugar on medium speed until the mixture is light and fluffy. The add the dry ingredients alternately with the Greek yogurt and vanilla to the creamed mixture, mix with a wooden spoon until smooth.  Spread half the batter into the prepared pan, then spoon 3/4 of the topping over the batter. Top with remaining batter, smooth out and then top with the remaining topping.

Bake cake for 50-60 minutes. After 50 minutes if the cake is not done but is getting too brown, top with foil until done. Test for doneness with a toothpick. Cool and enjoy.

Nordstrom Sale Picks for Your Home

A good morning to you. It is Saturday morning and I am curled up with a pile of magazines, reading and relaxing. Hopefully it will not rain because I am going paddle boarding this afternoon. I am not too sure how far I will get as my shoulders are sore from my yoga challenge this week.

I am sure that you know all about the huge Nordstrom sale that has been going on these past few weeks. But did you know that the sale is just not about Fall boots and sweaters. You can uses this sale to stock up on a few items for your home as well, or even to give as Christmas gifts.

Confetti Wine Glass

I think the confetti wine glasses would be great for the holidays or to give as a hostess gift.

And the champagne flutes would be great for your New Years Eve party or to pair with a bottle of your favorite champagne to give as a birthday or Christmas gift.

I love the set of mini late bowls for snacks. And you can never go wrong with a candle for yourself at bath time or for friends.

I love the basics that you can find on sale and use everyday. That said, I threw in the Missoni throw because I like the pattern, it is a little expensive and does not go with anything in my house but sometime you are just drawn to things, what can I say!

I hope that you have a great weekend!
